Animal Care League
1013 Garfield, Oak Park. 708-848-8155. www.animalcareleague.org
Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; Thursday noon to 7:30 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Take the Blue Line to Oak Park or the Green Line to Harlem. The shelter is located a few blocks east of Harlem Ave. on the south side of the Eisenhower Expressway.
About 175 dogs are adopted from the Animal Care League each year.
From other shelters or from people who can no longer keep them.
$110. All dogs have been vaccinated, tested for heartworm, spayed or neutered and come with a collar and leash and microchip. ACL has a Senior to Senior Program, which allows people over 65 to adopt dogs over 8 for a reduced adoption fee of $75.
View dogs on the ACL website or visit the shelter. Then, fill out an adoption form (pdf). The staff will help advise you as to which dogs will fit well into your lifestyle.
You've got to be over 21 and have a valid id with your current address. You'll need to provide proof that dogs are allowed in your home—a letter from your landlord or a copy of the lease if you're a renter, for example. Everyone who lives with you must meet the dog before it can go home with you.
The ACL relies entirely on donations and fundraising events for support. It also has a resale shop where all proceeds go to the ACL.
