camp dogwood
A completely dog-focused getaway where you and your hound can try lots of new activities and meet other dog people.
About 50 miles northwest of the Loop in Ingleside. Depending on where you're starting from, it'll take an hour to an hour and a half by car.
Take 94 W to Belvidere Rd. (route 120) W. Make a right on Wilson Rd., then a left on Nippersink Rd.. The entrance to the camp is on the right.
Pretty much any canine activity you can think of—agility, flyball, herding, tracking, lure coursing, rally obedience, and, yes, freestyle dancing. Classes are given at different levels, so even absolute beginners can participate. For those who don't care for organized play, there's a beach on Wooster Lake for swimming, and nature trails for hiking.
Presentations and demonstrations on a wide range of dog-related topics including canine CPR and first aid, behavior problem solving, and how to take good photos of your hound.
The camp is on 200 acres of woods, wetlands, and meadows. Rooms, in lodges and cabins, are basic with few amenities. You can choose a single, double, or shared room. Meals (for humans) are provided.
Your dog's food and dishes, a collar and leash, bags for picking up, and a crate or carrier for your dog when he is left alone in your room. Unless your dog will be sharing your bed, you'll want to bring bedding along for him.
Only healthy, full-vaccinated, well-behaved dogs over three months old are welcome. Children are not allowed, nor are dogs in heat.
