The city's first dog beach, the Susan Kimmelman Off-Leash Dog Beach, as it's officially known, was founded in 2002. More open to the lake than Belmont Harbor, which, aside from not being technically open to dogs, is not particularly clean because of nearby boats, this is a fabulous spot for waders and strong swimmers alike. It's not completely fenced in, though, so if your dog is likely to make a break for it, keep her on the leash. There are nearby human bathrooms and snacks at the Montrose beach field house. And remember, here, as in all Cook County DFA's, you will need a permit and tag that costs $5 and is available from many vets.
