fermilab
According to its website, this US Department of Energy high energy particle physics laboratory is exploring such questions as: "What is the nature of the universe?" "What are matter, energy, space and time?" and "How did we get here and where are we going?"
Happily, there's no need for you or your dog to be concerned with such issues when you pay a visit to the lab's 6,800 acre grounds which feature wetlands, woodlands, and tall grass prairie. One acre, which includes a swimming pond, is devoted to off-leash play. Entrance is free and no dog permit is required.
About 45 miles west of the Loop, more or less a one hour drive.
From Chicago, travel west on the Eisenhower to I-88. Exit at Farnsworth, and turn right. Farnsworth becomes Kirk Road. Follow Kirk Road to Pine Street. Turn right at Pine Street for the main entrance. Use this map to find the dog exercise area once you're at the Fermilab grounds.
A wide-open prairie and ponds to swim in, plus plenty of shade trees.
A lovely natural setting not too far from the city with ample parking, restrooms, and drinking water.
A National Environmental Research Park since 1989, Fermilab's huge grounds contain all the Midwest ecosystems, including tall grass prairies, agricultural fields, woodlands, and wetlands. It's also home to a small herd of about 60 bison symbolizing Fermilab's connection to the prairie and its position on the frontier of scientific discovery. (The bison are also just really cool, and bison babies are adorable.)
A leash, a picnic lunch, and a towel for drying off your dog after a swim.
Since 9/11, Fermilab has had increased security. You'll have to show a photo ID to enter the grounds. Also, the site is subject to closure at times of heightened alert, so it's best to call or check the website before you go. Dogs are allowed all over Fermilab's grounds, but they must be on a leash when outside the designated dog area.
The grounds are open to the public every day from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from mid-October to mid-April and from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. during the rest of the year. Admission is free and there's parking at the site.
