Looking for a place your dog can run free? We've got the most comprehensive list of off-leash areas throughout Chicagoland. Click on a neighborhood below for details. If you see mistakes or omissions, please fill out the General Contact Form and let us know.
There are more Dog Friendly Areas, or DFAs, established in Chicago every year. If there isn't one near you, there may very well be a neighborhood group working to get one established. Among these groups are:
To use any DFA in Cook County, you must have a permit and registration tag, available from many vets. The permit and tag cost $5 and require that you have a dog license and that your dog be examined by a vet and be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, hepatitis, parainfluenza, parvovirus, and bordetella. They must be renewed each year. For more information on the DFA permit and a list of participating vets, see the Chicago Park District website (do a search on "dog friendly area") or call 312-742-PLAY.
Other counties have their own regulations. See the listings below for more information.
If you'd like to create a group to advocate for a DFA in your neighborhood, the Dog Advisory Work Group, or D.A.W.G., a coalition dedicated to helping dogs, dog people, and non-dog people coexist comfortably, has a DFA Information & Assistance Committee that can help.
