Amanda Jones
Medium: Photography: black-and-white or color
Style: Jones' style is cool and minimal. She works in a studio using a white background that disappears against the strong presence of the animal's silhouette. Her closely cropped compositions are striking for powerful imagery that borders on the abstract. She captures each dog's personality and the character in their faces.
Best known for: Between her books, greeting cards, calendars, posters, magazine shoots, and TV and print advertisements, Jones is practically an industry. Her books include Greyhounds Big and Small (Berkley Books, 2004) Dachshunds Short and Long (Berkley Books, 2005) and Frenchie Kisses (Berkley Books, 2005). A Breed Apart: A Celebration of the New American Mutt, will be published by Clarkson Potter in March 2007.
Location: Based in North Adams, Massachusetts, Jones schedules portrait sessions in cities big and small, including New York, Chicago, and San Francisco. Portrait sessions are often sold out well in advance, so if you're interested check her online calendar and book now. Jones will travel to any place not on the official tour schedule as long as she's guaranteed ten or more gigs in that town.
Cost: Portrait sessions and five hand-printed images cost $850 through the end of 2006, then climb to $1,150 in 2007.
Production Time: You'll receive a proof sheet in about three weeks. Once you pick your favorite shots, it takes another four to six weeks to receive prints.
