Style: Ulriksen's figurative style is idiosyncratic and instantly recognizable. Cartoon-like, his paintings feature exaggerated, even distorted features, unusual perspectives, and intense colors.
Best known for: Ulriksen has published more than 20 covers for The New Yorker, many of which feature hounds. He has also illustrated two children's books, Dog Show (Henry Holt, 2004) and The Biggest Parade (Henry Holt, 2006).
Location: San Francisco-based Ulriksen works from photographs, but also interviews clients to get a sense of their dog's personalities and quirks.
