Valerie Shaff
Medium: Photography: sepia-tone
Style: Because Shaff works with a medium-format camera that produces unusually large negatives, her images have an extraordinary clarity that's hard achieve with a traditional camera. That clarity, combined with her use of sepia, square-shaped prints, and a soft-focus background, give many of Shaff's portraits an old-world elegance. Shaff prides herself on learning a dog's personality and habits before taking his photograph.
Best known for: Shaff's work has appeared in magazines (including Martha Stewart Living, In Style, and Cigar Aficionado) and in ads (for Purina, Friskies, and Eukanuba). She has also published four books, including I Am Puppy Hear Me Yap: The Ages of Dogs (HarpersColins, 2000) and If Only You Knew How Much I Smell You: True Portraits of Dogs (Bulfinch, 1998).
Location: Based in Germantown, New York, Shaff typically works in or around a client's home. She brings with her a "portable studio" that includes various hand-painted backdrops. Shaff will travel anywhere as long as her expenses are covered.
Cost: Fees start at $1,000 for the shoot and one 9" x 9" print. Higher fees include additional prints, larger sizes, or a combination of environmental and studio portraits.
Production Time: Contact sheets are available within two weeks, and completed prints two weeks later.
