Dear urbanhounders,

We all know it's coming: the bitter chill of winter that forces us into hibernation. So with summer ending soon, take the time to be outside with your dogs, go for long walks on dog-friendly trails, enjoy the crisp (but not yet frosty) air, and attend some of the many canine events happening around town.

Our listings below include a half dozen dog-friendly charity walks and runs, a Canine Carnival and a Paw Fest, two pet CPR classes, tons of adopt-a-thons, two canine costume contests, an ice cream social, and more.

Of course, fall is also the perfect time to hone your own Stupid Pet Trick, to teach your dogs to catch a Frisbee, or introduce them to... canine massage. And our listings below just happen to include a canine massage workshop.

If you must stay inside, be sure to visit Urbanhound Chicago early and often to share information, post pictures of your pup, plan getaways, and get veterinary advice.

Cheers,
Aaron Baar

Hound News

The Furry Friends Foundation is closing! We're not sure why (financial problems, we assume), but seemingly out of the blue comes news that this local no-kill shelter that focussed on finding homes for dogs with special needs is closing down. The 20 remaining dogs at the shelter urgently need homes by October 15. As the FFF website states: "We are making a huge push to adopt out our remaining animals as quickly as possible, while sticking of course to our strict placement policies to ensure the best placement. If you have been thinking seriously of adopting, NOW IS THE TIME! Please forward this information to your friends, family and colleagues."

The Chicago Off-Leash Meetup Group has been resurrected. So far, 21 members interested in off-leash fun and frolic have joined. Interested? Sign up now.

Lobby your legislator. Chicago residents, don't forget to call or email your city alderman and state representative, pressuring them to keep alive a measure to allow dogs at outdoor cafes.
