Dear urbanhounders,
Happy Holidays from Urbanhound.
If you're like us, now that the weather's gotten
colder the walks have gotten shorter (or nonexistent, if you're lucky
enough to have a yard). But, no matter what the weather, dogs need exercise and stimulation as much as humans do, so being housebound all winter isn't a healthy option for either of you.
Luckily Chicago has a few places where you and your companion can go to
burn off some excess energy indoors. You can take an agility or flyball class at
the Windy City K-9 Club (part of the Best Friends
Pet Care network). You can take an obedience
class from any one of a number of pet centers. Or you can even just
hang out at the new Of Mutts and
Men in Chicago, where for $3 each, you and your dog can take
advantage of pool tables, chess and television (for the people) and free
reign of the facility (for the dogs).
And even in inclement weather, nothing compares to the
unadulterated joy of a dog and freshly fallen snow. A little extra
bundling up on your part and the dog parks are
yours for the playing. Get out and enjoy, even if it's only for a little
while. Your dog will thank you.
Cheers,
Aaron

Got a budding pet
portraitist? The Anti-Cruelty Society is holding its
first annual Animal
Expressions Young Artist contest. Children in four categories
(5-7, 8-10, 11-14, 15-18) are invited to create works based around themes including Spaying & Neutering, Adoption and Responsible
Pet Ownership. Deadline is Feb. 23, 2007. Download an entry form here.
Think your pooch is pretty?
The Heartland Animal Shelter is holding its
first annual "Make a Smile Worthwhile"
pet photo contest. Winners will
have their photos posted for a year in the shelter and on its website,
and a grand prize winner will receive a $100 gift certificate. Deadline
for the contest, which will be judged by TV newswoman Carol Marin, is
December 31.
Congratulations are in
order. Congratulations to Chicago Police Sergeant Steven
C. Brownstein, who was named the ASPCA's
Law Enforcement Officer of the Year. For the past seven years,
Brownstein has been on the CPD's Animal Abuse Control Team, helping to curb
animal cruelty and dog fighting. Also, Lucy, a 5-year-old German
Shepherd (and former Chicago stray) was named Dog of the Year for saving
the lives of her family. After smelling smoke coming from the basement
of the family's Littleton home in the middle of the night, Lucy woke the
entire family, enabling them to escape unharmed.
