Dear urbanhounders,

It may not yet feel warm, but it's nearly spring. And while a young man's thoughts may turn to love, we find ours turning to puppies. Or at least playful dogs.

We're not sure why. Maybe it's the new flowers in bloom. Or perhaps its the thought of long walks along the lake (and maybe even a swim), but spring seems like the right time to get a puppy. And if you're thinking about expanding your pack (or starting one), Urbanhound is here for you.

If you haven't already done so, spend a little time with our Breed Finder. (It's even fun if you're not thinking about getting a new dog!) Or check out our Hound Talk message boards, where there's always healthy debate about the pros and cons of certain breeds.

Once you're finished, and you're ready to get a dog, click on over to our Adopt a Hound page. We've compiled information on eight Chicago-area shelters and rescue organizations that are always looking for loving families to take care of homeless or abandoned pets. And be sure to check our listings below for adoption events around town.

And once you've got your new pup, don't forget to make him or her a contender for Hound of the Moment.

Cheers,
Aaron Baar
Editor, Urbanhound Chicago

Another warning about stray voltage. Two dogs died last month in separate incidents that look to be related to stray voltage from electrical access panels on the streets and sidewalks. Though cities like New York and Boston have gone to great lengths to curb this problem, the deaths are a reminder that Chicago is behind the curve on this, and we must all be careful where we walk our dogs.

Agora not a meeting place for dogs. Thinking of taking your dog to the Agora sculpture garden in Grant Park? Don't. Dogs have been banned from this part of the park because too many owners were allegedly letting their pets urinate on the headless statues. While dog activists have protested the ban as extreme, it is worth noting that a dog-friendly park is nearby.

Dramamine for dogs? The Food and Drug Administration has approved Pfizer's Cerenia prescription medication, which is meant to curb acute vomiting in dogs, including vomiting caused by car sickness. According to Pfizer's animal health division, vomiting is one of the most common maladies veterinarians see, with nearly 2.8 million acute cases a year and another 1.2 million caused by motion sickness. The once-daily prescription medication is expected to be available by this summer.
