• Summer getaways • Public transit travel guidelines. • Events • The latest Hound News
Dear urbanhounders,

Summer's almost here, and if you're like us, you're starting to think about vacations for you and your dog. Whether it's taking an airplane to a far-away destination, or simply getting out of town for a day, we have suggestions.

We're lucky to have several places nearby that not only accept, but encourage canine companionship. Camp Dogwood, in the suburbs, and Dog Days of Wisconsin, a little further north, both offer camping experiences, trails and lakes where dogs — and people — can play. If you're in the mood for a little more structure, head to Dog Scout Camp in St. Helen, Michigan, where pooches can earn merit badges in areas such as water safety, backpacking and obedience.

Or maybe you just want to take a day trip to enjoy the warm weather. Again, we're lucky to have several options. From suburban forest preserves to the lush 6,800-acre grounds of the U.S. Department of Energy's Fermilab to the canyons and waterfalls of Starved Rock State Park, there are ample opportunities to get away from it all without having to pack too much.

If you're considering about traveling by plane, be sure to check out our guide to air travel. We've outlined general travel tips as well as detailed information for all the major airlines. It's a must-read before any trip.

Happy vacationing.

Cheers,
Aaron Baar

Chicago Ranks Last. The Humane Society has released its survey of the most humane cities in the United States, and Chicago ranked last. That's right, the Windy City was 25th of the 25 markets surveyed, in part because nearly 45 percent of all Chicago pet stores offered puppies for sale (compared with the sample average of 34 percent), and the city has too few animal advocates per capita. (Congratulations, however, to our urbanhounders in San Francisco, who live in the most humane city, according to the index.)

Putting Value on a Dog's Life. Every day now, it seems we hear of yet another lawsuit filed against pet-food manufacturers. But as we've long noted on urbanhound's Hound Law, when it comes to dogs or cats, it can be near impossible to sue for pain or suffering. Ditto for punitive damages. Now the Wall Street Journal reports a glimmer of hope: there is growing legal recognition that, yes, pets may indeed be worth something more than what we actually pay for them. Finally!

Lobby for Laws. There are two bills pending in the Illinois legislature that could use your support. One, Senate Bill 1279, would end discrimination of certain dog breeds by insurance companies. The other, House Bill 9, would allow judges to extend family protection orders to include pets. You can voice your support at the ASPCA's advocacy page, or contact your legislators directly.

Cable TV Goes to the Dogs. Animal Planet is airing three hound-related shows this month. Mondays at 8, the Monks of New Skete tackle behavior problems on Divine Canine. At 8:30, there's It's Me or the Dog, with trainer Victora Sitwell. The Crufts Dog Show (the UK's answer to Westminster) airs on Sunday, May 27 at 8 PM.
