IN THIS ISSUE:
• 10 Reasons to Love the Windy City • Adjusting to City Life • LaGrange Pet Parade and Other Events • News
Dear urbanhounders,

Ok, we may not be the most humane city in the country. But Chicago's still pretty great, especially if you're a canine. Here are our top 10 reasons why it's good to be a dog in the Windy City.

10. The Chicago Tribune's new blog, Unleashed, covering all things animal related.

9. The American Veterinary Medical Association makes its home in Schaumburg. It's probably not of great importance to us laypeople, but knowing they're close somehow makes me feel better.

8. Dogs are welcome at most outdoor eating areas, even though they're not technically legal. (And we applaud renewed efforts to make them legit.)

7. The Canine Cruise. What better way to spend a Sunday morning than on a boat with a dog?

6. The ever-growing number of off-leash areas in the city.

5. Indoor play areas like Of Mutts and Men for when the weather gets cold.

4. Dog Day at U.S. Cellular Field when the White Sox are playing. (They've already had it in 2007, but as they say on the North side, "Wait till next year.")

3. The efforts of various groups to make Chicago a no-kill city, led by PAWS, which is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its signature Angels with Tails event.

2. All the dog swimming areas in the region. Why live by a ginormous lake if you can't swim in it?

1. All the dog-friendly events that happen every month (that we're happy to list for you).

Anything I've missed? Feel free to post your suggestions in our online forums.

Cheers,
Aaron Baar

Dog thefts on the rise? According to the Chicago Tribune, thefts of toy dogs are on the rise in Chicago and around the nation. Like the paper's piece on dog park fights last March, the story itself is short on quantifiable information. But there's no doubt that owners of smaller dogs should be concerned, and that we should all take measures to protect our pets.

Renewed efforts to allow dogs at cafes. With Ald. Burt Natarus — who had opposed the measure last year — losing his seat on the Chicago City Council, 47th Ward Ald. Gene Schulter has re-introduced his measure to allow dogs at outdoor cafes. What's more, Natarus's successor, Brendan Reilly, is a co-sponsor of the measure and the state laws that kept the measure from moving forward have been amended. It may actually happen.

Make your dog a star. You've already put your pooch in contention to be one of Urbanhound's exalted Hounds of the Moment. But you want more for your dog. How about his or her face on a dog treat package? A Dog's Life — which makes all-natural, organic dog treats — is looking for dogs to go on their packaging, and your marvelous mutt could be one of them.

"Hey Mister, What Kind of Dog is That?" For great early summer reading (and watching), check out Baltimore Sun reporter John Woestendiek's seven-part multi-media series on his quest to trace his mutt's DNA.

Cable TV Goes to the Dogs. In addition to the shows we told you about last month (Divine Canine and It's Me or the Dog), Animal Planet will be airing its Dog Championships 2007 series several times in June.
