Dear Urbanhounders,
It may not feel like it yet, but spring is almost upon us. And what can bemore enjoyable for a dog than the coming of warmer weather (and longer walks). Accordingly, we'd like to give you a few tips to help prepare for the coming season.
What says spring more than baseball? The Chicago White Sox are continuing their tradition of letting dogs into the ballpark for a game. This year, the game is scheduled for June 5 against the Kansas City Royals. The Dog Zone usually sells out quickly, so it's best to contact the team early. Call 312-674-5244 for tickets and more information.
Spring is also time for charity walks, runs and other physical fundraisers. The Anti-Cruelty Society has already opened online registration for its annual Bark in the Park event. Thankfully, the shelter has tips about how to make sure you're ready to tackle their walk (and others) after a long winter.
Need further proof of spring's impending arrival? Camp Dogwood is accepting registration for its Spring Camp, with sessions dedicated to agility and obedience training. It's like camping with your dog.
Closer to home, the city's dog parks are also going to get busy again. And they're going to need maintenance before the spring rush officially begins. Check your local park to see when clean-up days are scheduled, and then pitch in. Your pooch will thank you for the extra effort.
Happy Spring,
Aaron Baar

Partisan dog biscuits. We're a little unclear on whether you should proudly order the treats that symbolize your party, or get those of the opposing party and feed them to your hound with vindictive glee. Either way, these goodies (manufactured, appropriately enough, by the Capitol Dog Bakery, with a portion of proceeds going to the Washington Humane Society) seem particularly apropos for primary season.
DIY guide to greening your hound. The brand new book Eco Dog: Healthy Living for Your Pet by Corbett Marshall and Jim Deskevich provides step-by-step directions on making things -- from meatloaf to shampoo to natural odor absorbers to a recycled denim pet bed -- to help reduce your hound's carbon paw print.
Lend a Helping Hand. The Anti-Cruelty Society has started two new community support programs and needs volunteers to help manage them. The first is Short-term Accomodations for Emergencies (S.A.F.E.) which helps people find emergency shelter for their pets in the event of displacement from their regular homes. The second program is the Stay Home Pet Program, which helps provides support to owners having trouble caring for their pets in the event of illness or injury. Interested in helping out? Contact Volunteer Coordinator Darlene Duggan.
What's On. Saturday evenings on Animal Planet are particularly hound-focused this month. The new reality show Groomer Has It premieres on Saturday April 12 at 9 PM. Twelve groomers will compete for a $50,000 prize and a mobile grooming salon. At 10, Showdogs Moms and Dads follows five families who sacrifice everything to make their dogs champions. On Mondays, Petfinder, in which hosts Jarod Miller and Dina Zaphiris help match families with shelter animals, continues. On Saturday April 5 at 8, the station airs the Animal Planet Dog Championships from Portland, OR. On Saturday the 12th from 8 to 9 PM, It's Me or the Fat Dog Update Special checks in with trainer Victoria Stilwell and the three generously-proportioned dogs she created a new regimen for seven months ago.
